So what did Mike Huckabee say?And what is it about women and their libido
What is it about women and their libido. I mean really?
Women who need sex and must have it so often that they need
to take a pill to prevent pregnancy.
Well I do believe. And Democrats
want us to pay for the pills.
…. Ok, that is not what it’s about.
To begin with, lets start with whose libido this is
about. Birth control was never about
women’s libido. Sorry, as a teenager in
the 60s, I heard lots of stories about women who had bundles of children in the
days before the pill. Sure there were
also rubbers but men hate rubbers and truth to tell, the pill put women in
control. So finally, with birth control,
women could accept their partner’s advances and not get pregnant. And it WAS the partner who pushed the
issue. As a man married now for 37
years, I can tell you that it was my team doing the urging, so our libido.
And what is the issue anyway?
The ACA mandates the purchase of insurance, and in most
cases, these policies are not inexpensive.
I ran a sample cost for NJ for a family of four with 2 adults and 2
children. My plan would cost from $8500
to $9500 and my out of pocket maximum could be $12,000. So, after paying $8500, what about birth
control? To encourage preventive care
the ACA created a list of treatments, tests and so forth that policies must
cover up front, before the deductible.
The list includes colonoscopies, mammograms, chemotherapy to prevent
breast cancer and birth control pills.
Birth control pills are part of preventive care for most adult women
under 50, and to be frank, it is a lot cheaper that the cost of having a baby. Nor is there anything new in mandating that
insurance coverage include birth control.
But the right has made an issue anyway, and the Catholic Church has seen
fit to make noise as well.
In his speech, Mike Huckabee chose to present affordable
access to birth control as if it was about female libido, and that by making birth
control mandatory preventive care, that Democrats showed their distrust of
women. And they are trampling on
religious freedoms too!
Well enough of that.
Birth control was never about female libido, and placing birth
control in a list of preventive care was always reasonable.
And as for a liberal press that goes out of its way to support
Obama, well they certainly have dropped the ball here.
PS: Read this blog about the way politicians are simply
market driven:
I suspect the Huckabee knew he was full of shit when he gave
his speech, after all, he’s a long married man, with grandkids. Still, to sell himself to voters, he must
debase himself by saying bullshit that his down-market voter will believe.
